The bone is engraved with the figure of a bird similar to a pigeon or a sparrow, both of which are Christian symbols.

The pigeon symbolizes peace and, also, the Holy Spirit, or Third Person of the Blessed Trinity. The sparrow symbolizes Divine Providence, as it says in the Holy Bible "look at the birds in the sky, they neither reap nor sow."

The artist skillfully sculpted the bone and displayed the features of the bird accurately. Bone was favored by artists of the time due to its ready availability.
